Juvenile Burglary

Protecting the Future of Florida's Young People

Young people sometimes make bad choices. Whether due to peer pressure, for a sense of excitement or for any other reason, minors may behave in ways that get them in trouble with the law. Entering someone else's home or car to steal something, known as burglary, is one of the most common juvenile crimes in Florida. If you or your child is facing a burglary charge, it is important to seek out the help of a lawyer with extensive experience handling juvenile offenses.

Orlando criminal defense attorney Jeanette Bigney has spent much of her career focusing on the legal issues that confront juveniles in Florida. She is a respected voice on juvenile law, and has participated in many continuing education classes on the subject. She stays up to date with the most recent developments in our state's juvenile system because it is ever-changing, and she strives to provide the highest quality defense possible for Florida's youth.

Whether you are a young person in trouble, or a parent of a teenager charged with a crime, Ms. Bigney is ready to listen to your concerns. To arrange a free consultation, call 407-680-2114 or contact Ms. Bigney's law firm online.

Types of Burglary in Florida

Juveniles can be charged with the same types of burglary with which adults can be charged. They include:

  • Burglary of a dwelling (house)
  • Burglary of a conveyance (car, truck, boat or other vehicle)
  • Burglary of a structure (office building, warehouse or other commercial building)

It is important to realize that all of these terms are defined broadly. For example, "dwelling" includes things like porches, garages or even a tent in someone's yard. Attorney Bigney has experience handling all these burglary charges, as well as armed burglary. She knows what it takes to succeed in these sometimes difficult cases, and she will work hard to earn a positive outcome for you and your child.

Carhopping

Many young people face charges for an activity that is commonly called "carhopping." Carhopping usually consists of two or more people who target residential areas. This type of crime is usually initiated by the perpetrator going from car to car checking for unlocked doors. Once they find an unlocked door, they use it as an opportunity to take someone else's belongings. Carhopping is committed among a small group of people. Some people physically check for unlocked car doors and take items and others may take part by being the driver or the lookout.

Passionate and Knowledgeable About the Rights of Juveniles

Cases against minors are normally handled in Juvenile Court. The juvenile justice system is meant to rehabilitate young people rather than punish, but that does not mean the system is pleasant for minors or their families. It is critical to work with a lawyer who understands the unique features of Florida's juvenile system. Ms. Bigney knows the system and is passionate about protecting the rights of young people accused of burglary and other crimes.

She will work hard to prevent a conviction,  which is especially important because college prospects, job opportunities, apartment rentals and loans can all be very difficult to obtain with a juvenile crime on one's record.
