Jeanette D. Bigney was admitted to practice in Florida in 1999. She began her career as an Assistant State Attorney in the Ninth Judicial Circuit in Orange and Osceola Counties. Ms. Bigney handled traffic, misdemeanor, felony, and delinquency cases. She was also assigned to a specialized unit that focused on prosecution of domestic violence, stalking, and violations of injunctions cases. Ms. Bigney's years of experience as a prosecutor laid an excellent foundation for both her knowledge of criminal law and trial skills.
In law school, Ms. Bigney used her legal knowledge to work for handicapped and disabled persons' rights, dependent children, delinquent juveniles, and victims of domestic violence. She was awarded a Public Interest Law fellowship while a first year law student, which gave her the opportunity to advocate for disabled and handicapped persons' rights.
Ms. Bigney spent over two years working with the Guardian ad Litem Program in Broward County, Florida. She advocated for the best interests of children who were believed to be abused, abandoned or neglected. Her passion for child advocacy also extended to delinquency court, where Ms. Bigney assisted both the victim and the responsible child in determining an amount of restitution.
During her final year of law school, Ms. Bigney completed an externship at the Legal Aid Society of Orlando, helping women to protect themselves against domestic violence. All of these unique experiences not only provided her with legal experience but the ability to understand people with compassion.
